Skellig
by David Almond
My favorite children’s book of all time is Skellig by David Almond. Although set in a totally believable modern world, we encounter a creature that is utterly "other" and strange. The children discover it beneath spiders and dead flies and it is simply the best depiction of an "alien" that I have ever read. No science fiction writer has come close to Almond’s achievement.
