They say "writer's write," but getting started can be tough. I usually being with an outline, though sometimes just sitting down and writing whatever pops into my head can be fruitful, particularly if I begin from a premise of "what if" and ask myself: "What if this character were in that situation," and then the answer flows naturally.

I personally aim to hit a certain number of words each day. You should pick a number or a format that feels right—and achievable—for you.

There are three books on writing that I recommend as must-reads: The Elements of Style by Strunk and White, On Writing by Stephen King, and Bird by Bird by Anne Lamott. It is also important to solicit feedback whether it's from an editor, a family member, or even a close friend.
