This book was a very good look into the lives of teenagers in a way that it is not always shown. The way Patricia Cumbie captured the dialogue between characters was spot on, and the issues the characters dealt with were also realistic and portrayed in a thoughtful and sensitive way. Overall, this book was very good, and it was definitely a breath of fresh air to read, while also bringing up good questions and insights.

Patricia Cumbie has written a truly wonderful coming of age story. This is a great story and once I started reading it I couldn't put it down. I loved watching as the characters developed into more mature characters. This novel showed a true bond of friendship. Libby cared for her friend so much that she was willing to share Angie’s secret to keep her safe but risk losing Angie’s trust and friendship. Libby was a true friend that any person would be luck to have as a friend. I look forward to more novels my Ms. Cumbie.

This was a very moving book and I absolutely loved it. Patricia Cumbie has a way with words and Where People Like Us Live is a stunning first novel. It really grasps the idea of a true friendship and makes us realize how lucky we are to have friends. I really liked how Libby was the character telling the story, it really gave the book a voice. This book is a must read for any girl, regardless of if you have one friend or fifty. I was unable to put the book down, anxious to hear what was going to happen to Libby, Angie, and their families next!

Wow. The girls in this book could have been any other fourteen year old girls on the street. The characters connect to the age group, and bring the feelings of confusion, exploring sexuality, and coping with family situations to life. All teen girls treasure their friends above all else, and Libby shares this ideal. It also reminds us that the well being of a friend matters more, sometimes, than anything else. This book is great, and the characters are very easy to relate to. The struggles of Libby and Angie are the struggles of us.

Faced with the difficult decision to allow her friend to be hurt or destroy their friendship, she makes a powerful choice and faces her own fears. This is a very moving book that will affect its readers and I think it would be an excellent choice for a book club

This book touched on many subjects in a seamless manner: First is a family that has to deal with frequent moves, financial hardships and a life void of luxuries besides the infrequent visits to a DQ; second is a young woman having to make a tough decision regarding the one and only friend she’s made in her newest ‘home;’ third is a realization that ‘taking the plunge’ just might not be so terrifying after all, as long as you have support from a true friend. Libby, the main character of Where People Like Us Live, really seems to come into her own through this book. When you first meet her, she seems to be quiet and mousey. As the book takes us through her life experiences one summer, the reader finds that Libby grows into quite an outspoken individual who rolls with life’s punches. Everybody needs a friend like Libby.

This is a very touching book and it made me think about the world in a new way. I also loved how this book told the story of a relationship without using too much dialog. Authors often use long conversations broken only by “he said” or “she said” to develop characters, but Patricia Cumbie successfully uses plain prose to (more artfully) achieve what lots of quotation marks could have accomplished.
