Trixie Shapiro may be one of the shyest students at Mason High, but she's also the funniest. When her best friend, Jazzy, signs her up to perform stand-up at Senior Talent Night, Trixie's terrified she'll absolutely choke. And as if a seemingly disastrous debut isn't enough, Trixie's drama teacher encourages her to try againthis time at the local comedy club, Chaplin's.
To her surprise, Trixie's confidence begins to swell, and a surefire comedy act is born. Trixie finds herself on a fast track, winning contests and earning a job as the opening comic at the comedy club. It's a dream come true. Then Trixie lands a boyfriendher longtime crush, hipster Gavin Baldwin. Now caught between the increasing demands of two worlds, Trixie faces a difficult choice between a romantic, inviting path and a risky shot at comedic stardom.
Ellen Schreiber narrates an inspiring and entertaining story of a shy teen who, struggling to find her voice, discovers a shining place in the spotlight.

Reader Reviews from First Look
Once again, Ellen Schreiber delivers not only the pizza, but the coke and the double-fudge brownies as well. In Vampire Kisses, she finds a way to give a humorous light to dealing with hatred of the unknown, and downright evil clique involved girls. In Comedy Girl, Trixie Shapiro gives us a world of funnies, heartbreaks, ambitions, and everything else teenage girls have to deal with. I really enjoyed the book, from the Bush-Girls, to Vegas, Schreiber gives awesome descriptions, hilarious and sparkling, leaving us dazzled in their wake. An excellent book, as only expected from Ms. Schreiber.

From page one Ellen Schreiber pulls you into Comedy Girl as the hilarious, yet oh-so wise voice of Trixie Shapiro. Trixie is a character whom many readers will identify greatly with, as her voice is much like that of your long-time best friend. Fans of teen fiction will find the voice of Trixie hard to resist, and find themselves turning the pages as quickly as possible to find out what exactly Trixie will do next. Overall this was a hilarious novel, filled with funny stand-up comedy acts, and exciting, yet crazy, situations that will keep you reading long into the night.

This book contains side-splitting laughter and a great theme, proving that you have to believe in yourself to achieve your dreams.

I loved this book. I loved Trixie. She reminded me of myself back in middle school, I remember my first laugh too, it was great. And the book was very well written and funny. There aren't enough women in the comedy field, so it was really cool to read about.
Lauren (Zephyrhills, FL)
I really like Trixie Shapiro! She is smart and funny and introspective and shy (like me). She also has character and parents who really care about her even if they do mess up sometimes (like mine).

I loved it!!! It was extremely funny! I would recommend it to a friend and to anyone. It had a great mix of friendship, humor, and romance. I absolutely loved it.

In this book, Trixie proves to be a young girl with huge dreams and goals in life. Her dream is to be a comedienne, and her role models are those who have succeeded in her profession. She proves to be someone to look up to, and I really respect her for accomplishing her dreams. It also shows that her personality is larger than life. And even though she may be quiet, she is ambitious too. It gives quiet people, like me, hope that day; we'll step out of our "quiet" box, and become the person we dream to be.

Comedy Girl was well written, well thought out, and one of the best books I've read in a long time. Recommend it to a friend? You bet. I can't wait to read more by Ellen Schreiber.

Ellen Schreiber's novel, Comedy Girl, touches my heart and inspires me in a way many books simply can't.
Casey (Corinth, TX)
I enjoyed reading this book. It was funny, touching, and believable. It was interesting how comedy was the focus of this story. There aren't too many books out there like this one.

Comedy Girl by Ellen Schreiber is a great novel guaranteed to make you laugh. Schreiber’s history as a stand-up comedienne is obvious through Trixie’s talent. I’d recommend this to anyone in need of a laugh.
Kristin (Farmington, CT)
This book is full of laughs. It definitely gives you the feel of what life for a budding stand up comic is like. It also deals with some tough choices for a teenager - having to choose between career dreams and a cool boyfriend. Innovative and a fun read.
Patricia (Baltimore, MD)
Reading this was a lot of fun! The cover made it look like it would be funny and it was a lot of laughs. Even though most of us won't be doing stand-up comedy, I could feel Trixie's pain when she would practice for hours and still not be able to get the words out when the time came to perform.
As a librarian I read lots of books and this one had a teen's voice and made me want to keep reading!
