Reader Reviews from First Look
In his new, powerful novel, Game, Walter Dean Myers captures the excitement of playing sports and striving to achieve great heights in life. Drew Lawson's strength of character, hope, and skill on the court help him grow as a team player on the court and eventually secure him a place outside of his inner city home. Myer's skillful use of language and dialogue create a realistic, slice-of-life story for today's teens to learn about friendship, teamwork, goals and different types of winning.

Awesome book for anyone who enjoys basketball. Drew is totally into his game, though he feels like the coach is sabotaging his chances of making it big. How he deals with that and what he discovers about himself and the game in the process are lessons that are great for any young person to learn.

If you play or love basketball—or even if you don't—hook yourself up with Walter Dean Myers' newest novel, Game—that man can write about basketball and write as if he was actually in the game. I haven’t read anything quite like this before. I never really cared about basketball…but Myers takes you on the court, begins to help you understand the subtlety of the game, and I began to respect basketball as an intricate, even sophisticated, game. But Game is more than just the basketball makes us play and live with his players. This book has a lot to say about how to play our lives. Myers has the story told by a kid who is excellent on the court, but he likes to play his own game. He thinks he has to be in there all the time for the team to win and doesn’t understand that the game—any game, including life—has to be played with others in order for anyone’s game to be successful.

Game by Walter Dean Myers is about a young, black high-schooler who lives in Harlem living the good life as a black teen. The most important thing to him is basketball or what we call it "game" His dream was always to play in the NBA and this book shows how much care he puts into trying out for the NBA in his own high school. I think this book shows a teen how to strive for what you want and never give up. I have already told my teacher about it and she thinks it sounds absolutely fantastic!
