Guns are a fact of life for young people growing up in the United States. They are present in homes -- for protection, sport, and hunting. Guns are also on the street -- for defense and security, and in gang-related uses. Guns can cause accidents, injuries, and deaths, while they can also nurture self-esteem, bolster confidence, and foster athletic abilities.
The impact of guns is life changing and undoubtedly twofold.
In a series of evocative and stirring interviews and photographs, S. Beth Atkin presents an array of young people who candidly share the mixed consequences of guns in their lives. Told in their own voices, these are their remarkable stories.

Reader Reviews from First Look
Gunstories by Beth Atkin is a book that should be mandatory reading for ALL students and discussed with parents, teachers, and friends. Young people discuss guns in a positive light and a negative light. As with any subject, it is only with EDUCATION and knowledge that a change can be made. I definitely recommend this book and hope that it can be a fixture in ALL elementary, middle, and high schools. (P.s. If you are a school librarian, ORDER a copy!!)

A fascinating look at a difficult topic! Many viewpoints are presented, the book is fair and balanced. But the stories of gun violence just naturally have more impact than those of kids who enjoy range shooting. The dichotomy between rural and urban viewpoints is striking. The wonderful photography really adds to the text. Recommended.

Despite the fact that I'm not really in support of guns, it is nice to read a book on such a controversial topic that does not carry a political agenda. It's not your typical Pro/Con book either. It gives actual perspectives from real life people...teen people who just want to tell it like it is.

GUNS! One of the most controversial of subjects is well handled by S. Beth Atkin in this compilation of true life stories. No glossing over, both pro and con are equally represented. This is a book that should be part of every school library across the nation! I can't wait to give a copy to a young friend who is enthralled by guns, hopefully he will see from these tales that with gun ownership there comes a lot of responsibility.

These riveting true stories and pictures pierce through the reader's heart as everyday, ordinary teens tell their stories on how guns have affected their lives. Whether you are pro-gun or anti-gun this book addressed an important issue non-biased.
Teachers and Teen Librarians could use this book for an arousing and thought provoking book discussion – sparks Teen discussion on a controversial subject.

This book was really thought-provoking and touching in how it portrayed guns. Somehow I had never imagined that they could do any good, or that they could do quite so much bad, it challenged my perceptions about the use of guns and showed it as the complex many faceted issue that deserves serious consideration to both the good things and to the bad.
