FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
HARPERCOLLINS PUBLISHERS BECOMES
FIRST MAJOR TRADE PUBLISHER TO SELL E-BOOKS TO LIBRARIES
Signs Deals With OverDrive And netLibrary To Distribute PerfectBound E-Books
New York (January 23, 2003) – HarperCollins Publishers today announced that it has finalized agreements with netLibrary and OverDrive to sell PerfectBound e-books to libraries across the country, making it possible for libraries to lend them to their patrons. These are the first such deals by a major U.S. trade publisher.
Both the OverDrive and netLibrary e-book management systems make it simple for libraries to add e-books to their collections, check e-books out to patrons, and check them back in again automatically at the end of the loan period. In addition, the systems allow each e-book copy to be loaned to only one person at a time, in the same way that a print book is loaned. As with all PerfectBound e-books, digital rights management technology will be used to protect the copyrights of HarperCollins authors.
The PerfectBound e-books available to libraries include bestselling fiction and non-fiction titles such as Prey by Michael Crichton, Abraham by Bruce Feiler, The Princess Diaries by Meg Cabot, The Essential Drucker by Peter F. Drucker, The Lives of the Muses by Francine Prose, and I'll Take You There by Joyce Carol Oates.
“The technology is now in place to expand our e-book sales to the library market, which we believe has enormous potential,” said David Steinberger, President of Corporate Strategy and International for HarperCollins Publishers. “Many libraries have already been managing electronic collections for several years, and recognize the benefit of instantaneous remote access to a large selection of high-quality books for their patrons. In addition, we believe that libraries will play a critical role in educating readers about the benefits of this developing format. This deal represents another opportunity for us to serve our authors and market their books to the broadest possible audience in as many formats as possible, consistent with the strategy articulated by our President and CEO, Jane Friedman.”
“Both netLibrary and OverDrive have created distribution models which strike a balance between the needs of libraries on the one hand, and authors and publishers on the other,” said Christopher North, Vice President and General Manager, Electronic Publishing. “Libraries are able to offer their patrons a great service, while the authors’ and publishers’ rights are protected.”
“We are extremely pleased to add HarperCollins Publishers to the list of high quality publishers partnering with netLibrary to increase the number and types of e-books available to libraries,” said Rich Rosy, Corporate Vice President, netLibrary. “Increasingly, libraries have been encouraging us to add more trade titles to our catalog, and we commend HarperCollins Publishers for their leadership role in developing a program for libraries.”
“HarperCollins is providing libraries and their patrons the e-books they have been longing for -- best selling titles from leading authors” said Steve Potash, CEO of OverDrive. “PerfectBound titles are especially valuable in that they take advantage of the e-book format by providing valuable extras for the reader.”
PerfectBound has published more than 350 titles around the world since the program launched in 2001, many with special features unique to the e-book edition. It remains the only e-book imprint to publish on a worldwide basis in the English language. PerfectBound e-books are available from www.perfectbound.com as well as from dozens of online retailers worldwide.
